*names have been changed to protect my friends. All others are real.
As I sit at my desk listening to music, TLC’s Creep comes on. And for some reason it reminded me of Veronica and I’s mission that we successfully pulled off last November in San Diego. I just sat here and laughed about it, still finding it hard to believe we actually pulled it off.
It’s a story of the ultimate woman’s revenge when men do us wrong. It’s what every woman dreams of doing, and has similarly been the plot of an episode of Fresh Prince and a few movies. We could have written a book and been on Harpo. Haha. My only regret is not blogging about it along the way, sharing the cheesy stuff that would have better made this real life story more interesting for anybody out there reading this. But for now, I can only recall the story that has been a wild memory for my friends and I.
My friend Veronica was dating a guy named James for a while, and things seemed to get pretty serious. He came to visit her often, they shared endless lovey, dovey text messages, emails, phone calls- and he even made a trip to Disneyland where he spent time with her and her young daughters (this being his first time meeting her kids, so it was a big deal). Not to mention, he seemed to be the type of guy she wasn’t use to. He excitedly spoke about being a part of her family and being involved with her kids (even eventually adopting them), their wedding, marriage, the whole nine yards. Trust me, these are things that were/are VERY foreign for Veronica to hear. So she of course thought she found that needle in the haystack after YEARS of searching for “the one”. She wasn’t going to take this one for granted and had really watched her P’s and Q’s with this relationship. She thanked God everyday for this man who literally seemed to appear out of nowhere and who had made her the happiest she had been in a very long time.
Suddenly he started acting like an ass, got distant, and she heard from him less and less for which seemed like no justifiable reason. They hadn’t had a fight or an argument, not even a disagreement about anything recently. Everything on the surface seemed perfect, so his very sudden distance was driving her nuts and making her question everything. And of course, because he lived so far away she had to rely on their mutual communication (it wasn’t like she could just pop on over to make sure he was still alive). So eventually when communication was cut off almost completely, he finally contacted her. All she was thinking was she just wanted some closure and wanted to wrap things up and yes, she wanted to hear it from him, in his OWN words as to why this happened. So she didn’t waste her time. He kept beating around the bush after many an effort of conversation. She finally heard it from his drunken mouth that it wasn’t going to work out because, he claimed, there was no chemistry between them…and he knew it after the first time they met and went on a date. You can imagine the mind boggling thoughts that can go through a woman’s head at this point. I mean, why lead someone on like that right? Would you kiss someone anyway if you weren’t feeling it? Knowing it wasn’t going to work out, all the while stringing her AND her children along. There was even someone else in the picture. Normally this strong woman doesn’t give a crap if a man is a dog like this…she moves on pretty gracefully. In all honesty, the idea for this plot of revenge only came about innocently because of something else. It really did.
Thank Myspace. It is a wonderful tool to the investigative mind. If you know your way around it, you can find out almost anything you wish to. It all started when Veronica was curious to see what her youngest daughter’s father had to say on his page. To see if he has mentioned anything about even having a child. So my best friend Sara and I created a fake profile that needed to be realistic looking. We spent a few weeks posting pictures of my best friend, creating her alter-ego and giving her a name (L). Soon she had friends and conversations with them and we were ready to roll. As planned, the baby daddy had accepted the request and we had access to looking at what was on his page.
It wasn’t long after when Veronica got curious about James. So we flirted with him and eventually friend requested him as well. And like a naïve dumbass, he took the bait. It was at this point, I took over Sara’s alter ego. It was my personality and Veronica’s knowledge of him with a mixture of Sara’s personality that got him really interested. It wasn’t more than two weeks later when he started wanting to talk on the phone. Veronica had added an extra line to her account and bam! The “Biz Line” was born. Mind you she didn’t add the line for this occasion, but she needed it for other reasons. We also ended up changing the area code to reflect our story of where L was from. This whole thing was working out smashingly.
